CELLULITE – What can we do about it?

Cellulite is a harmless skin condition in which the build-up of fat underneath the skin, causes it to be lumpy and forms dimples in the skin usually in the abdomen, hips, buttock and thigh region. Although this is a condition that affects the population, it is mostly observed in women.

Studies have found that circa the 80% to 90% of the female population that has gone through puberty has cellulite.

The amount and the thickness of the cellulite present in the body are determined by genetics, sex, age and the amount of fat stored in the affected area.

While genetics, sex and age are uncontrollable, other factors like healthy food regimen and physical activity are, and they are important contributors to the appearance of cellulite.

Things such as high fats, carbohydrates, preservatives and salts and calorie surplus, are likely to increase the appearance of cellulite. In this case, it would be appropriate to follow a balanced food regimen. On the same note, exercising increases muscle mass which helps in skin flattening. Even when done at a low to moderate rate, exercise increases heartbeat rates which stimulates blood flow throughout the body and aids in fat loss.

Cellulite presents itself in three different ‘grades’ as researchers have identified which are:

-Grade 1: here its visibility is minimal with 1 to 4 visible dimples also referred to as ‘orange peel’ and it becomes more apparent when the skin is squeezed

-Grade 2: in this stage, 5 to 9 dimples are visible without the need for squeezing; it is also referred to as ‘cottage cheese’

-Grade 3: at this point more than 10 dimples are visible, typically referred to as ‘mattress’ as the dimples are more evident and continuous

Although cellulite is natural and the majority of women have it, the looks of it are not as widely appreciated therefore I am going to outline some treatments that can help treat it and reduce its appearance.

Firstly, we have the so-called ‘Topical treatments such as creams that claim to firm, tighten and smooth the skin which would result in the reduction of the appearance of the cellulite. In the formulation of these creams, ingredients such as caffeine and retinol are often used as the main ingredients.

Caffeine is known for its dehydration properties which becomes useful for fat cell reduction. Retinol, on the other side, becomes useful as it thickens the skin thereby reducing the appearance of cellulite.

Another way that is speculated that cellulite could be treated is through traditional medicines and treatments such as Ginkgo biloba which is a traditional Chinese herb that is believed to promote blood flow to different parts of the body, which helps in the reduction in the appearance of cellulite. The grape-seed extract is a traditional European medicine that is also rumoured to help in increasing blood flow.

In like manner, dry brushing is also believed to alleviate the looks of cellulite as the skin puffs up as a result of the brushing which resorts to the visibility of the cellulite.

However, these creams do not remove cellulite and in order to keep seeing results, they must be applied constantly and continuously.

Other ways of treating cellulite are through non-surgical procedures, also known as non-abrasive procedures.

At at1.AESTHETICS, we offer a variety of non-abrasive treatments that are painless and significantly help reduce the appearance of cellulite. These include:

-Cryolipolysis: this is the non-surgical procedure that involves the removal of fat that is underneath the skin through freezing. This is done by breaking down the fat beneath the skin so it can easily be absorbed by the body or excreted. Results can be seen from three to four months after several treatments.

-Ultrasound: It is a procedure that uses sound waves to target and eliminates the fat in the abdomen and thighs. Results take two to three months to be noticeable.

-Laser lipolysis and Radiofrequency treatments: these are a combination of tissue massage, radiofrequency technologies, infrared light and diode laser energy that are used to treat cellulite.

-Vacuum rollers: this method helps to improve lymphatic drainage by encouraging the accumulated fluid between the cells to return to the vessels and move towards the bloodstream and flushing toxins towards the lymph nodes.

To reiterate: to help with the process of the treatment of cellulite, a healthy food regimen and incorporation of some form of physical exercise could be crucial in the maximization of the results.
